Does my truck still need the ceramic resistor and the ballast resistor? If you look at the top two pics you can see the resistor at the bottom left hand side of the pics. My understanding it they are two different things.
I managed to break the reluctor this morning and it wasn't available locally. Since I was planning to get one of the Performance Distributors DUIs very soon I will just wait till next payday and buy the DUI dist. I hate to buy all these parts to just take them out shortly after.
But on a good note I did learn something about taking apart a distributor, its a pain when you don't know what you are doing. LOL but really that was actually fun if you look past 2 broken screw heads, one screw that had to be removed by an extractor, and breaking the reluctor.
I still need to figure out these wires so I will still be going over them to figure out where everything is and going.
I bought the 1978 Ford factory manuals the other day so hopefully they can explain everything alot better than the Haynes.
the DUI wiring is easy, you basically throw all that other stuff out.
I have a relay from a miscelaneous vehicle running to the red/green ignition wire to turn it off and on, to 12v battery and then on to the distributor, that's all you need for ignition wiring with one.
Nothing wrong with the Ford/motorcraft combination, but getting rid of all the wiring really does make things easier.
The one wire thing is one of the many reasons I decided to get that setup. What I meant by going over the wires was to just learn what most of them go to and what for. I like the fact there is so few wires involved because it simplifies things and cleans up the engine bay.
I was scared of externally regulated alternators for the same reason, all of my stuff ran single wire GM alternators until I was forced to make an external unit work, pfft, a whopping 3 wires to make it run...
I finally got it! I plan tomarrow to go install it so hopefully all will go smooth and it will actually crank up and run. Can't wait though, got some good wrenching ahead and I am sure I will learn something in the process.
Well I got the truck to run tonight. I was messing with it for a while and when I finally got to where I could crank it it would not run. Luckily right when I was about to give up for the day a guy happend to come by and help me out and he got it all timed in for me so tomorrow I will go back out and put the light on it.
Just so anyone will know, the 14" breather unit like the Edelbrocks will hit the edge of this distributor. If you plan to get this distributor you may want to look into a smaller diameter breather unit. This is on the 400.
wedefyu - I looked into the Mallory but just went ahead and went with the PD one because I liked the simplicity of it. Mine is a very large diameter cap which took some work to get everything to fit right.
I found a breather spacer kit at Oreilly's that fixed the clearance problem. I installed new belts and thermostat today. I wanted to be safe than sorry since it was sitting up for a year or so according to the previous owner.
Just need a steering column and a timing light and I will be able to drive my truck after owning it for two months.
