Bolting it up

Hi all Q? today is why is it different? I have a oil burning 77 460 with a c6 transmission in my motor home, i purchased a used 1969 460 from my local salvage yard with the intention of putting in the motorhome. This particular 77 engine has a long and sorted history which is to ugly to put in print so I decided to just end the headache and replace it. Any ways I got it all cleaned up and set into place and my torque convertor has to wide of (what i call it? ) a guide nipple it will not go into the end of the crank. Is this common ? I did my home work and called my friendly napa store and they said that the cranks they sell are interchangeable so I made a ASSumption that ford made them the same also. BAD plan!! Are torque converters interchangeable if I go back to the salvage yard ( they also said i was not doing anything unique by making this swap ) will they have something for me or do have enough meat on the nipple to cut it down so it fits or ??????? Thankyou for your input forgive my keyboard skills and spalling

The cranks and torque converters come with two pilot sizes: 1.375" and 1.850". You appearently have one of each. Find a converter to match your crank and you should be good to go.

unless you got a motor from a manual vehicle...then the pilot may still be in.....measure the opening and compare to the above listed measurements....if it's way smaller, make sure it doesn't have a pilot bushing or bearing in it....

yep i bet that's your problem, ford made 2 different size pilot bushings for the end of the crank. it seems like that is the problem because of the differences in the years of the motors. the earlier ones used one size and the later ones the opposite. you should if you have both cranks at hand look aat the end of the crank and you can see the differences in the holes ground in the end of the crank. Think I got it! Thanks fellas for the input did the double checking on the crank verified what I have and the printed this out and went to the friendly NAPA store, well not being proud and willing to admit they could not help they refered me to the local transmission rebuild shop and the propriator was happy to help me out and had the old style torque convertor in stk. its in the trunk of the car to be installed this weekend. The salvage yard lost a few points but I was a gentleman, they said I had to by the whole transmission, ouch thanks for the help but....no thanks! Again Thank you for your time and knowledge
