Unhappy Starting, and idle issues

I have a 390 in my ford with eddies carb...i can barely get the truck to start and when i do get it to start, it will jump to 2000 rpm's and hold steady for about 5 seconds then it will die. It's getting plenty of gas as i can smell it and see it coming from the carb if i manually pump it from the carb itself, can anyone give me an idea as to why it will not start and stay started...thank you.

What is an Eddies carb? Edelbrock?
It sounds like either a large vacuum leak or the floats are too high. Need more info. Is it smoking black?

Yeah its an edelbrock. No black smoke its just regular exhaust color when i can get it to run right. I wouldn't assume its a float issue because it ran just fine a couple of days ago. I took it off the other day to test another carb i got and when i put this one back on it hasn't ran right since. I've checked the base of the carb for cracks or what not from tightening the carb too much, but found no cracks....what would u like to know that i haven't covered, thanks.

I would check the needle and seats, perhaps a small piece of debris got in the fuel inlet during the swap.

Do you have a schematic of what vaccum lines go where on this carb?

Front and rear large ports can be for PCV or power brakes.
passenger side front is ported vacuum for distributor and the driver side is for manifold vacuum say for a modulator valve if needed. I usually have this one plugged off.
