Trying to decide what tank to hang under my '72 4WD F-100. Been looking at a couple on ebay, anyone got any suggestions as to sizes/mounting options? Will get the spare tire out from under there, and put it in the bed.
i would agree with scrapyardking, i would think that the in cab tank would be the best for off roading, it cant get dented or hurt. that is unless you really mess your truck up but then your gas tank would be the last thing you would have to wory about. but if you really want one in the fram rails you could look at getting a stock reserve tank, they sat jsut infront of the rear wheels and inside the fram.
I'm pretty sure that stock reserve tank wont work on a 4x4. Look for the rear tank from a 70s highboy. It fits up under the back of the box and these trucks have the same frame width as your 72. May be hard to find though.
i replaced the cab tank in my 71 cs f250.with a cab tank from a 78 dodge.dually.
it fits pretty good .also the gauge sender is the same as ford.it also holds 25 gallons.the ford tank holds 19.

Clarification needed.
The auxillary tanks used from 1967/72 mounted in front of the axle (midship) and held 25 gallons.
The 1973/79 tanks that mounted behind the rear axle (aft axle) held 19 gallons.
thanks for the info. Have ordered a tank from an outfit in PA. This old girl wont be doing much 4 wheeling anymore since I only drive it a couple times a month. (Thats what the new truck is for now). Tank will fit between rails behind axle, and I might put a skid plate under it just for kicks. got rid of the cab tank long ago, and gained 4 extra inches of leg room. Buckets went in in place of bench. Should be a fun little project.
well i was going to tell you i replaced my in cab tank on my 67 F100 2wd with a (1967-1970 Mustang gas tank kit) i just had to make a fram for the tank to set in and raise it up and mount it between the fram rails
Here's a site that has some cool tanks. I like the 45 gal tank that goes where the spare tire is. Or maybe a 75 gal tank for the bed. Wouldn't have to get gas for at least a couple days with that much reserve.
If you want it to fit between the rails it will need to be the 32 gal tank if 67-72 model. I have it, and there is a lot to be desired. It required a lot of fab to fit it in. Plus connecting the fill & vent hose is very hard. There connections happen between the tank and frame. The hoses run between the bed and frame, not a lot of room. Then you still have to do something with the filler neck. Then the tank is not coated to prevent rust, so you will need to apply a coating.
Since watching a car build show a while back, I decided to do the flip up door in the bed to get to the cap. This is also a poly tank, thats why the skid plate. I guess if I would hit something with a poly or steel tank, it could still puncture it. The truck has a 4" lift and I can get the tank up pretty high, so should be ok. I went with a fairly small tank (15 gal), as I dont drive it much, and dont want the gas to get stinky. (Currently have a 55 gal in bed tank, that will be going away.)
