My 2001 EB 4x4 Expedition [65,000 miles] w/ the big engine is switching to 4x4 drive all by itself -did it 2 times so far.
It hasn't been wet, we're in AZ and since here it did it twice in parking lots.
The last time it did it [last night] I moved the selector **** to 4H and back to AWD and could hear a motor or something move, then I backed up a few feet and I was back into 2WD.
The first time it happend about 400 miles ago I was pulling into Flying J and could feel the front end get stiff and noisy. At first I thought it was because of the texture of the asphalt but as soon as I turned the wheel I could feel resistance and knew it was in 4 WD, and the dash indicator was on.
Backing up a few feet returned it to 2WD.
Both times the 4X4 indicator light was on on the instrument panel.
Is there anything I need to do or maintain to stop this from happening again?
It sounds like your GEM is "confused." You can take it to Ford and they'll run a diagnostic test with a scan tool hooked into the data link connector under the dash. Hopefully there will be a diagnostic trouble code present for them to track down the problem.
FWIW, I'm in about the same boat as you are, but mine won't disengage back out of 4wd so I added a switch to completely turn 4wd off.
Could it also perhaps be a bad sensor tricking the GEM into thinking that traction is lost and is subsequently engaging A4WD? If so, I'd think we would se an ABS light but I can't be sure.
I don't know off hand. I must admit to knowing a REALLY good electrical gremlin tech at my Ford dealership. He hooks up a number of pieces of diagnostic equipment that illustrate the signal (or lack there of) from each sensor.
