Engine Swap

I have a chance to buy a 1999 F350 with a 5.4 Triton that has a spun rod bearing and was wondering what was the easiest way to pull the engine? The normal way up thru the fenders or by lifting the cab and front clip off the chassis? Any advise will be much appreciated.

HOLY CRAP...performing an engine swap on a truck of this caliber just scares the crap out of me! Dunno why...maybe it's just one of them amazement things.

Can't offer you any help...but good luck...if you do get the truck, I hope it all works out for you!

Are you going back with another 5.4L?

Both ways have their pros and cons. With the 5.4, it's not too hard to just remove the hood and yank the engine from the top. For this engine, pulling the clip really doesn't buy you much other than it's easier to reposition the engine and reassemble the accessories when you're ready to go back. But messing with the clip can be a little bit of a hassle.

PS...if you're going back with a 5.4 into that thing, it would be a good opportunity to do some engine mods. There's a LOT of great HP upgrades for that 2V engine.

People have removed the V10 through the hood opening

Just remove as much as you can, the radiator, grill, everything.

The dealer just pops the cab off, but they have the lift to do it.

If you don't have that capability, just do it the old fashioned way.

The plastic inner fenders come out pretty easily. Getting them out of the way can only help a lot

The 5.4 should come out just fine.Taking the front clip off may help but its not needed. I have never pulled a 5.4 from these but I have pulled plenty of 7.3 diesels out.
