Some legit tech aside from "how big of tires look good with my mudflaps?"
I decided to weld up the rear end on my 79 f150. So far, its taken about 3 hours, with 2 of that being welding.
The specimen for testing
These are the only tools I needed besides a jack/jackstands, and of course the welder.. a 4 way, 9/16 wrench and deepwell socket with an extension. A flat head screw driver, Some deep creep penetrating oil, and the brakleen for cleaing it.
Heres right after I pulled the shafts.
And this is the wonderful stuff that came out of the diff. What you cant see in the pic, is the inch of water on the bottom.
Whats left of the access hole in the carrier.
My camera only had that many pics left to take, otherwise I would have gotten some as I filled the carrier.
Now to just clean it really good, install new axle seals, gasket and premium dyno.
very nice! i like the pics. did you mig or stick it? and how hard was it for you to get in there?
i tried welding a 9" a couple years back and gave up. i couldnt get in enough to really burn in. course this was on some other kids truck i reallly didnt care about and didnt wanna spend much time on!
that was with an arc. I couldnt really get in there to clean it after each rod, but hey, whatever, its not going any where. I took a pretty decent sized bolt, and lined up the spiders and dropped it down in there, and it fit pretty good. It locked it up tight, so i just started welding everything to everything. I turned the buzz box up to 150 for the first half of the filling, and then down to 120 ? for the rest of it.
The really sad part about the picture with the bucket of gear oil is that I can actually smell that as I sit here and type. YUCK. You know it's time to find another profession when pictures of bodily (I mean vehicle) fluids make you sick to your stomach because you can actually taste them........
Actually, I'm debating on the front yet. I'm just not sure, I'm only on the 300, so I think I might just do it, because I really dont think I'm ever going to turn this truck into a power monster, and It will probably never get meats bigger than 33's, 35's and the most. If it ever gets 35's, I guess I'll find the weak link.
Oh, and cleatus, I know what you're saying about the gear oil. NASTY stuff. I almost spilled it on me........I was so happy when I caught it just before it hit the point of no return.... I even managed to do it all without getting dirty. for the most part anyway.

Well, I have a locker in my weak D44 and 36.8" tires pushed by the ol' 400....
No trouble with the axle(YET), just going through old u joints quick.
Well, might be worth starting a little earlier tonight!
What seal you talking about for the front(diff seal)? IF so, why not just use some RTV or Right Stuff(sealer).
I think I have some extra 9inch gaskets/bearings laying around if you need em. I know they're cheap, but they're just taking up space in my garage right now.
Here's my dillema........... My axle has tapered roller bearings. The only ones I can find for this truck are ball bearing. Can someone give me a part number for the seal and bearing for the tapered roller? Is that how these trucks are, or did someone swap my axle out?
