Cold start question

OK, this isn't the typical cold start question. Should I have to hold the throttle partially open when starting my truck in cold weather (under 15F)? If I let the wait to start light cycle and then hit the starter, the truck starts right up, but then dies right away. My training is that computerized engines don't need throttle to start and idle - I guess it comes from the warnings when EFI first came out to NOT touch the throttle while cranking. If I give the truck a little throttle - about the equivalent to 1500 RPM no load - it starts right up. In about 10 seconds I can let it idle down and it idles just fine.

Is this OK? Is there a problem that I should be dealing with? Is this a symptom of a IPR problem?

Could be a weak fuel pump, or low fuel pressure, I said "could be". I would check the fuel pressure at start up while cold and then again after it has warmed up. If it's low (both times) shim the FPR to bring it up. If it's only low on cold start up you "may" have a weak pump (pin hole in the diaphram) causing a leak down and needing time to build pressure. Check it and let us know. Some others will be along to offer their advice.

I also have a hard cranking 7.3. Although when it is -15 outside, I can accept that, but it seems to have to crank over 2 to 3 times before firing. Could my issue be the same? Weak fuel pump maybe?

Might try ,turn on the key , waiting 30 or so seconds after the WTS light goes out, then try starting ,, gps stay on for up to 2 minutes..
