302 engine build

Is there a problem using heads, crank and rods from a 73 engine with an 83 block? I am not sure if the deck height changes, or if it matters. My 73 block was bad, and a friend gave me a block that I think is an 83-85. The casting # is D90E-6015-E3A.

No issues, but check the bottom row of head bolt holes in the block, at some point in the 80's these were extended into the coolant jackets and you'll need thread sealer on the lower bolts. Nothing fancy, I use teflon pipe thread dope for this.

D90E is a '79 casting.

It's very likely a D9OE-6015-E3A block was used in a 83-85 vehicle. Just because the prefix says it's a 79 block, doesn't mean it was a 79 only casting. The date code will tell you when it was cast.

What about swapping a 64 upper onto a 86 and up block? I can get a rebuild 87 roller cam short block for next to nothing. My wife's 64 Fairlane has been sitting for 8 years and I think atleast one cylinder is rusted if not more since a valve or two is always open. I am pretty sure the cam is rusted as well.

I already know the heads need to be rebuilt with harded valve seats at a minium.

Those 64 heads might have smaller valves too. Better check that before doing any work to em.

Well her car, 1964 Fairlane, with a 289 only has 15,163 original miles on it. So she wants to keep it all original if at all possible. Looks like the engine will come out for a look over and worst case overbore. The only two things missing from the car is the battery and "Fairlane" script on the back under the truck lid. I already know every rubber seal and gasket will get changed out as well. It's been sitting for over ten years after the neighbors came around and informed us that it hasn't moved more then 3 houses in that long. You gotta love small towns that know everything that happens in them.
