Loose Dana 60?

I have a 74 F250 390/C6 4X2 with lift and a Dana 60 rear. I have for some time been trying to figure out a weird low speed vibration. I have replaced the carrier and the u joints are tight. I noticed recently that when the driveshaft is removed from the rear end I can turn the rear end yoke about 1/8 of a turn! Isn't that too much? I am going through this truck and don't mind spending money, I just want to fix what is broken.

You need to pull the cover off the diff and check where the slack is coming from. With the cover removed, turn the pinion yoke and watch to see what happens inside. A worn bearing could cause the ring and pinion not to mate up properly, also check the pin that holds the spider gears into the ring gear carrier. I have seen where the pins get loose and wallow the housing, have also seen the holes in the spider gears get very worn. Any of this could cause your slack.

While you are in there, get a dial indicator and check the back lash. Hold the pinion steady and move the ring gear back and forth with out letting the pinion move. Should be around .005" and .010" would be the max limit.
