mix-match 460
a 1970 Lincoln 460 that runs great, but big compression & soft valve seats.I just acquired a 1978 460 from a 1-ton van, rear sump and all, runs but tired. If i put the '78 heads on the Lincoln motor....What kind of comp. ratio will i get?? I'm not interested in way huge horsepower, just long time reliability and torque for pulling 26ft camper.
Here's a post by a respected engine builder from another list:
-> My question is about hardened valve seats, I have put them
-> in the past rebuilds I have done, but since then I heard
-> some people say that they weren't nessecary. I learned they
Inserted seats are for repair. They interfere with heat flow from the valve; the ports have to be ground to blend the seat in; improper installation (can you tell with your naked eye?) will let them come loose, with potential for catastrophe. The cutting necessary to install the seats weakens the head and can promote cracking, particularly if the head is subjected to higher than stock pressures or heat, ie a high performance engine.
You want inserted seats about as badly as you want a veneral disease.
Most shops call them "hardened" seats; most inserts are plain old cast iron, like they just carved out of your heads. True hard seats are Stellite and they cost over $10 each, and they're righteous (expletive deleted) to cut a seat on.

I concur.
I had stelite exhaust valve seats put in my 429CJ when I installed the 429 in my truck.
The shop that did it showed me what happens if you don't.
So far another 150,00 miles with NO PROBLEMS and lot of compression.

Use the older high compression heads, but have hardened seats installed. A good friend of mine is the head machinist at the local shop that I have all my work done and he's shown me ALOT of heads that run unleaded gas with non-hardened seats. He's built (documented) well over 2,500 motors. You'd be surprised at just how much damage that really does. Besides, if your really worried about having the installer screw up, perhaps you shouldn't take your parts to that shop. Just my input.

I kinda hope I mis-understood your reply, mil1ion. Were you implying that I acted/said something immature? If I did and offend someone, I'm sorry. I don't think I did, but I'm not perfect. Just checking.

for the head work alone could go towards a set of L&L headers!!
" Oh honey....we can afford to go camping again when the 'good' stuff drops under $3.00/gal.And as for the race car...I drive it to the track!!!"
" Well i thought you put all that work into that truck so that we could ............"
A 9:1 460 with headers,decent cam,proper tuning will put out what (on 87oct fuel) 170 hp?????!!!!!!!
This is the impression I'm getting.
Oh ...did i say i was on a bit of a budget..??

I'd think about 270hp with 450ftlb torque, a little more if you match the intake manifold to the head ports. That should get you to work and back and take you camping on 87 octane. Your cam is the major player only to a certain point with lower compression ratios. HP numbers sound nice, but torque and where it happens for your purposes is what counts.
