Smile So I'm thinking about an Excursion...

Need to get a 4 door truck so I can take some or all of the kids with me when pulling the car trailer. Dream truck is 79 F350 crew cab, but my wife says it has to be newer than 01 (besides how hard and $$ it would be to find a well-equipped 79 in good shape). So check prices, Superduties are lots of $$, so are Supercrew F150s. Pointed out an Excursion on the 401, my wife says it looks good, better than full-size van. Start checking prices, these things are up to 5k cheaper than pickups! And on the Superduty chassis! Not too worried about gas mileage, won't be driven too far or often.

Any idea what the tow capacities of the Excursions are? Would be a gasser, as the wife also vetoed diesel, unfortunately, but the gassers are cheaper. Now I need to figure out how much I can sell the Focus for.....

Good choice if I do say so myself I just love my EX i wouldn't trade it for anything. It can pull the **** outtta bull if it want to. The V10 has the same towing capacity as the 7.3 deisel but in fact can tow more due to the lower weight of truck. Don't qoute me but its something like 12000lbs towing cap. Don't get a 5.4 ex the fuel milage is worse then with the v10. If yu can talk her back into it get the 7.3 deisel.

What kind of fuel mileage do you get sewerat? I remembered you had one after I made this post...

the lie-o-meter readss 11.3mpg no matter what. A freind of mine took it up deer hunting, pulled a trailer full of 4wheelers, loaded it up with 8 guys gear, 4 men in the truck up to apsley and back got 11.3mpg. I load it up with me the wife, the dogs and go up for xmas it getss 11.3 mpg. i have it figured out to cost about $20 / 100 km real close to what my 79 bronco with a 351m used to get funny how they haven't improved fuel milage in 20 yrs technology

I was talking to an old timer friend(Bill) of mine this past summer and he was basically saying the same thing about gas milage only difference was he was talking about cars and trucks from the 50's LOL.

He said the only thing they fixed was getting rid of the stinky gas smell.

BTW that gas milage $20 for every 100 kms is just about bang on for my 79 Bronco.

Rick.

The X also weighs 1500-2000 lbs more, and has a lot more capacity than the Bronco.

My 79 was costing about $18/100km last time I checked. That was mostly stop and go, no real highway driving.

I think the Ex is a few more then 2000lbs heavier. When I put mine on the scale at work it was 1/2 tank fuel real close to 8000lbs. Now my 2005 F150 was about 6200lbs and it got about the same fuel milage as well that $20/100km range

Ouch. My 79 weighs in at 4200 with driver. No wonder the X needs a V10 if you're pulling a trailer!

I was faced with a similar debate. I needed something with towing capacity and really wanted an f250 4door, but even for a high km 2000+ your looking at 13-18 and min 15 for even a high km diesel. Even F150's are 9-13 for somthing midrange, wihch wont be able to tow like a HD or Excursion will.

Excursions are so impractical for most people that you can get them pretty cheap 10-15 for a gas V10 and you have just as much towing capacity and even more people carrying capacity. If you can deal with a slightly higher fuel cost and the pain for parking something so big, and not fitting in mall parking garages then an excursion is a good alternative.

I love mine, and am glad i bought one. For the price they are a good buy especially when you compare to other ford trucks in the same price range.

I vote that you hold out for a 73-79 crew cab. You can get one cheaper than what you'd spend on an excursion, your insurance and maintenance would be less. You already know the truck and could do just about anything to it for less $$. You likely won't see another one like it as you drive down the highway.
With the money you save you can buy the wife something shiny to keep her happy, everybody wins!!

Not sure about the cheaper part, Frank. Once I got one, it would need to have AC, comfier seats, probably a paint job etc.... Unique yes, cheaper not sure.

Plus there's the SWMBO veto power.

You know there is also A LOT to be said about fuel injection... I really like the walk out on a cold day, turn the key and go part. I have done my share of carbs. I even got the bike in EFI. I trust that the EX will start every morning, has let me down 2 times but, the old bronco every time i started it i crossed my fingers, had a javelin the same thing, a buick regal, same deal... huh they were all carb'd cars???

No question that modern fuel injection is more efficient and maybe more reliable. BUT....when the EFI wouldn't start sitting in your drive way or when the carb'd vehicle wouldn't start,....which one were you able to get going when you lifted the hood and tinkered about???

Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned, hands down, is the Falcon, 1 barrel carb, manual choke , used it to boost the TBI chevy and the EFI dodge on cold winter mornings. OK the car is slow and ugly but it starts every time!!

Don't get me wrong the ex is a nice ride but I'd go for the character of an old crew. So would Chad, but he's not allowed !

Frank
BTW whats SWMBO??
