292 y block ?s

I have a 51 F-1 the prior owner had a 327 installed but didn't finish the job, I would ultimatly prefer a ford engine so I have been keeping an eye out for an alternate. I was thinking along the lines of a 302 or 351C but am open to any suggestions from those of you who have gone those routes.

what do you think about this engine, as far as fit, power and transmissions adapability, aftermarket parts and accesaries etc?
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=218&ad=2564870&cat=103&lpid=3
also what do you think about the price? I don't really know anything about engines, espesially y blocks.
Oh and why does the exhaust manifold pipe come across the front of the engine? I have never seen that before, if thats what it is?

Thanks

Josh

Y blocks are a good choice. I would prefer to keep stock all Ford---what is your interest? a newer 302/351 will be easier for parts but a yblock is a great choice/AND I have 4 and even though they have a few problems--so does any engine. Bill

That pipe is the crossover pipe, taking the exhaust from the left side to the right side and to the single exhaust. One of the identifying features of the Y-blocks.

There are pictures in my gallery of a Y-block with ram horns for dual exhaust. The cross over pipe was Fords way of warming up the engine when it was cold out, the exhaust was forced across the intake manifold until the engine warmed up. There should be a heat activated valve on the passenger side, it is missing from the engine in the link.

Y-blocks have limited transmission options, but they are great engines.

Yup, great engines with a great sound. My '54 is original with a rebuild in 1979 and running great ever since.

Only on engines installed in trucks, no Y-blocks installed in cars had the cross over pipe.

Hey Col., I read your post and thought "well I learn something everyday!" since I know very little about Ford cars. But I thought about it for a while and then got out Eickman's Y-Block book. I think the smaller car Y-blocks had had the crossover and the bigger and later Y's had dual exhaust and did not need the crossover pipe.

On page 13 there is a picture of a 1954 EBU (239 ci) car engine with the crossover pipe. There are several pictures of '55 and later, bigger engines with dual exhaust, cubic inches like 292 and 312. On page 30 it says, "... the crossover exhaust pipe used on 1956 and earlier single exhaust systems."

So I guess we were both right, just thinking of different years.

Hey guys are the 1956 Ford cars all 292s? I have been watching a black 56 for a yr now,and the owner wants too much......I stopped today and opened the hood.
I was surprised to see the yblock was in there---after all these yrs.

Is this a truck engine or is it maybe the original----it has the cross-over pipe on it,and appears to be all original??
I will try again to try to get the owner to sell-----if it runs----nice,but will need some work,-definately worth rescuing!! The cross-over pipe is on it!!! ........Bill
