fuel guage doesnt work?

ive got a "1992" fourwinds motorhome 7.5L E4od its actually a 1989 chassis E-350 acording to the chassis vin, anyways i bought this and the gas guage didnt work, its kinda a pain to keep filling it up to make sure you dont run out of fuel on the road, its got liek a 30gal tank i think, well i was under it and saw that it has 3 hoses going to it 1 for the generator, and 2 going to the motor, now i've read it doesnt have a in-tank pump but has a low and a high pressure pumps along the frame rail, when it was running one day(the engine) i was messing with the wiring going to the tank, i took of the 3 prong rubber connecter and this "humm" went away pluged it back on the "humm" came back on so it sounds like there is a pump in the tank, and i was working on my generator and i couldnt get any fuel to come out of the aux fuel port, i was ussing a sucktion vaccum, i had about a half tank of gas and fairly level ground, is there a hard line that goes to the bottom of the tank? how hard would it be to remove the tank, seems like there is 2 metal straps and thats it to drop it, any ideas, photos, diagrams will help alot

An 89 should have an in-tank low-pressure pump and one hi-pressure pump on the frame along with a fuel reservoir and a fuel filter.
The aux in-take in the tank should only go down about half way so you do not run out of gas while camping without shore power.

Yes it will until you go up a hill, the fuel tank is very low or you go to WOT.

i went up stevens pass in wash and had to pull it in 2nd and felt like it had less power so that would explain that, after we got to the top i realized it was unpluged and pluged it in, but at idle it seemed fine, got any ideas on the fuel level sensor, is there a way to test the resistance on the float to make sure that part is still good

Unplug the plug to the tank and the gauge should peg, short the gauge wire at the plug to ground and it should peg to the other end of the scale.

Here is a diagram that may help.

ok i just grounded the yellow/white wire to the frame and it reads past full, and reads past empty when the connnector is totally disconnected so does that mean the float inside the tank is stuck or isnt working? any tips for dropping the tank?

Yes you are right, bad sender.

Make sure it does not have any gas in it or very little. If you can not get the gas out you will have to use a floor jack to balance it on as you drop it.

Spray the band bolts with PB blaster or WD40. Let soak for a while with three applications.

Unclamp the fuel fill hoses at the tank or as close to the tank as possible. Then take fuel fill hoses off or cut them. Plug the holes with rags or paper towels.

Support the tank and unbolt straps and remove them.

Unhook the wires, vapor hose (may need to pop it out of the tank) and fuel lines as soon as you can reach them as you lower it.
I am guessing you have fuel lines with the plastic "U" clips on them. Pull them off, they will more than likely break.

Lower the tank to the ground and slide the tank out into the open.

Take a blunt punch and hammer and tap the locking ring on its tabs until it releases. Then work the sender and pump out of the tank.

Empty the tank of gas and clean it or wipe it out.

Then replace the big "O" ring and work the new sender and pump back in to the tank. Tap the new lock ring until it locks and the put the tank back in.

ok i just got the whole thing out and figured that the float is full of gas, there was a crack on the float it-self, i moved the float by hand and the guage in the cab goes up and down so the problem was the float...what a easy fix

oh and the tank i have had like 6 10mm bolts holding the fuel pump on the tank, and the fuel hoses were a snap in type lukily i had the plastic removers

do they sell just floats? what could be used in reserve for one

I do not think so. You might get the gas out of it and run a bead of solder over the crack and dunk it in water and see if it leaks.
