So I just ahd a motorcycle accident and sprained my right ankle and foot pretty bad so I had to buy another form of transportation for cheap. So i picked up a 93 ranger 4x4, with a 4.0L and auto trans, can't use a clutch with my damn foot! it's got 130,000 miles on it and the trans had a rebuild about 4 years ago. I've been driving it around the last couple of days and everything is going okay so far. I'm going to do a full fluid service on it this weekend mainly for peace of mind. I'd like to slowly start making it more off-road freindly, slight lift, bigger tires, you know how it is. Anyone have any suggestion on good lift components for these trucks? Also, is the auto trans going to be abel to handle going off-roading? It has auto-locking hubs on it now with push button 4x4, so i'm going to change it over to manual locking hubs at least, any ideas would be great, thanks.
Be careful doing the fluid flush on the A4LD, it's very picky about how much fluid it has in it. Take your time and make sure you get it filled properly. Plenty of articles on here about it if you do a search.
How much of a lift are you looking for? I'm assuming you want a suspension and not a body lift. The truck can be leveled cheaply to run up to 31" tires. 4" and 6" lift kits are common, cheap, and easy to find. Superlift makes a rather highly rated one.
The auto tranny, the A4LD, is not known for strength. You have the "heavy duty" version with the 4.0L, but even then don't beat on it too much. Keep a careful eye on the fluid and it should be fine. Just be reasonable off-road.
Warn makes manual hubs for the Ranger that have a good reputation. The vacuum-based system in the older Ranger 4x4s with auto hubs is quite unreliable, so I'd check to make sure they work currently to begin with.
Anything else just ask, plenty of knowledgable Ranger and 4x4 guys around here.
Yeah, mine came with 31x10.5's as well, no lift, and so far they haven't rubbed. Thanks for the advice Pilot. I'll take care to fill it to the specified amount. I did some research and found a $150 pair of leveling springs on the rough country website. Seems like a good deal to me, also throw some new shocks under, and it'll be good to go. I'm not trying to ruin this thing offroad as it's my daily driver. Anything I could do to beef up the A4LD for the furture? Or should I look into a different trans all together>

My apologies, leveling it lets you run 33"s...I knew 31"s sounded odd.
Anyways, I've heard there's a "heavy duty" rebuild kit for the A4LD, but someone with an auto would have to fill you in, I had a manual behind both engines in my Ranger. Either way, it's a comparatively weak tranny, but take care of it and it will last.
