The torque converter lock up mod. I have been searching and reading and was looking for someone to chime in on the basic pro/cons. Actually cons is what Im focusing on here. I do not like the way my TC locks up, its a HD stock built one i had with my suncoast tranny (7K miles on each).
I think im going to do this mod tommorrow, the only thing I'm scared about is forgetting to unlock before coming to a stop. Whta kind of damage does this cause?
It'll just stall out like if you were in a manual tranny and forgot to push in the clutch.
It's a good mod, I did it and use it all the time. If you don't like it, it's easy to undo. I used a switch to ground out the wire to make sure I liked the results before I did the LED's. It only took 10 min. to do and then I was sure that the mod was for me.
You should prob rename the post or start a new one with TC mod in the title and you'll get more responses.
I have it, i havent ran any expressway yet with it, i have stalled once or twice palying with it. I have not see any benifit as of yet. But, I drive 11 miles to work, it takes about 20 minutes with all of the trafic and lights. I may not have the perfect place to try it out with.
I live in Denver and I use it all the time in the mountains. I tow almost every
day 3800 lbs. or 8000 lbs depending on which trailer I'm using. It is nice to use on downhill grades to help slow the truck without riding the brakes. And it keeps the temps down on hilly terrain. The transmission automatically locks the converter in O/D, so on the highway at speed in O/D you won't see a benefit at all. When you downshift to pass or accelerate up a hill is when it does it's best stopping the heat from the slippage.
I hardly use it unless I'm towing. My transmission fortunatly never was a sloppy slushbox, and I took care of the valve body, solenoid, and one way clutch when it had less than 10K mi.
It's any easy mod to try. Just make sure if you decide for sure to keep or undo the mod, solder and heatshrink all your connections and you'll never have to mess with it again.
Seems like there would be a way to tap into the tach signal and use the lower RPM limit as a "permissive" into a relay so that the mod could run "automatically", "Manually", or "off" by way of a single pole and double pole switch with the relay... you could even get fancy and use 3 differently colored LED's (red for "OFF", blue for "manual", and green for "auto")... I just don't know how to get the tach signal and make use of it in this manner since I'm not an electronics guy.
Youll know it, not like you're going to forget it. The truck will try to keep going, and then youll reach down and hit the switch. Ive accidentally bumped mine on the way out, not realized it backing up, and then when i hit drive it locked up and stalled. All the guys were laughing wondering how i could stall an automatic transmission, LOL.

you are reading my mind, think I got it figured in stock and manual the other still in the thinking stage
somebody has something similar with exhaust brake but works through cruise switches
well after much research and much debate, i decided to hook it up
basically, im not sure that i will use it much but it is there if i need it. i can really tell a difference in accleration time if i can time it with the 1-2 or 2-3 shift when i hit the switch, then it skips the ususal TC lock up and shoots straight past 40 (the normal lock up speed) and straight to 54(OD)
