Finishing up on a little experiment. Recently...I had posted on this forum somewhere a while back that I kept my speed down to 68-69 mph and my rpm below 2000 and I was getting around 15.5 to 15.9 mpg ( and this is with minimal goosing around)
Then some one else had posted that if I would just drive around 62-63 mph that the results would "blow me away".
Well ......For the past 5 tankfulls (and this is to the top of the neck each time and hand figuring the math) I have been driving...religiously..62-63 mph back and forth to work and any other place as well on the highway.
This is hard to do with everyone else flying past you at 75-80 mph and staying in the right hand lane... trying to stay out of everyones way....but....the results are in.
a whopping17.6-17.9 MILES PER GALLON
This is 95% highway driving and I"M dieing to burn a little rubber again....but this is the best milage I've ever gotten.
You have stumbled upon what Earnesteugene AKA Gene was getting at all along, the aerodynamics of our trucks sucks. Especially in the winter time when the air is cold and dense creating even more resistance. Not to mention crappy winter blend.
So this heavy truck with poor wind resistance can see much improved mileage by reducing the drag and fuel needed to maintain higher speed simply by slowing down some. Too bad we can't cruise 55 on the interstate without causing a traffic problem. That would be great fuel economy.
Mike I don't know if I can drive that slow 55 geeeessshhhh I remember when that was the law of the land.
Nobody can Dave. I will be getting the MPGs that go with that tomorrow AM on the way to Swamps. That is why we neeed another gear for cruising at about 75.
