4x6: about your 460...you say you have 3 inch exhaust and a k/n filter...how do you like it? did you notice any power or gas mileage gains? what did it run you for the filter and exhaust? what kind of muffler do you recommend? also do you have exhaust tips if so what size? i was thinking either a flowmaster 40 or 50 series, or a Dynomax Turbo Muffler, also it would be 3 inch pipe from the stock headers to a single inlet/dual outlet muffler then dual rear exits beside the hitch and then 4" tips ..i am looking for that deep powerful tone... thanks

The K&N was about $50 I think. The exhaust was about $300. I cut the back out of the cat to allow for the 3" pipe and then into a Dynomax Race Magnum muffler (smaller, louder, better flowing than turbo muffler). This exits behind the rear wheel through a 3 1/2" stainless steel tip. There was so much heat exiting the exhaust that the tip turned a bronze color by the time I got home from the exhaust shop. Makes me wonder how hot it was before I opened it up. These mods along with removing the horns in the air tubes and advancing the timing to 12* made the greatest improvement. It has a deep throaty sound at idle with a nice rumbly tone at freeway speed. It sounds a heck of a lot better than the stock whoosh pipes that the factory put on. I'm looking for that scratch and dent sale on the Doug Thorley headers that Dusty talked about above. I also put in 160* t-stat but am going to change it to a 180* based on the information from the performance unlimited MPG project website.

I would pay attention to the information from the performance unlimited MPG project website... I followed it exactly in the beginning and it really worked.. including putting an adjustable fuel pressure regulator on the beast.. I did however buy an electronic fuel pressure gauge and mounted it inside my PU instead of the mechanical on the hood like in Project MPG... Now that I have ventured past the basic mods, I need a bit different tuning curve but the MPG examples work very very well on a stock Speed Density fuel injected 460's!

THE ABSOLUTE cheapest power you can do to a late model 460 is install an early 429 timing set..since the EFI460's have retarded valve timing, they are destined to be sluggish. The 429 timing set actually advances the valve timing 2 degrees, rather than being retarded 4 degrees like the smoggy 460's are.
Also, when doing this...check your ignition timing BEFORE swapping, then re-set back to where you were when you are all done. (Changing valve timing will also change ignition timing!)
This tip will cost you around 50 BUCKS!!! Maybe 60 tops, but will give you THE biggest gains in torque and all-out power!!!

How early of a 429 timing set should I put in? Will the speed density system be effected by this change? How will converting to a MAF setup effect that? Lotta questions, little knowledge... (trying to change that!!!)

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Nov-01 AT 09:26 AM (EST)] That tip sounds like a pretty good one.. But I have a bit of a delimia with it.. How will the timing changes effect.. eer... a... affect? Oh well who cares. My question is how well will it work with my supercharger/MAF conversion, The "stupid-charger" needs for the ignition to be retarded based on boost, will I not be counteracting the MSD ignition retard I just plunked down my hard earned bucks for? Not sure but I dont think this mod will help me, Dusty? Opinions anyone? I am always ready to listen... I will have my motor back apart in a while, depending on Dusty and his Cummings conversion, so If doing this mod is a good thing then would be the best time to attack! Please let me know what you all think.

71 or earlier timing chain, mike are you getting frustrated with the charger before you have it on the truck? Ill ask my nieghbor tomarrow, he races with a blower on his 429. I wouldnt think that it would adversly effect spark timing, it only is changing the valve timing, you set the distributor at stock and the spark is still at the right time. Let me ask and ill email you with the info.
