found a 87 ranger with a 2.9 in it.says water pump is out.has 16x,xxx on it.my question is.are these motors good ,reliable?or do they have problems?had a 89 with the 2.3 but guy offered twice what i payed for it.so it's gone.but it was good truck.thanks
The 2.9s are generally good and reliable. The only thing though, is that if overheated, they were prone to cracked heads. Since you said it needs a new water pump, there could be a chance that it over heated. I would take out the dipstick and check the oil, if the oil looks milky, then there is a good chance that the heads are cracked. New improved heads are about $200 a piece IIRC.
Not sure how far they go. The ranger my dad gave me (can't drive yet, don't have a lisecne) has 140k on it. From what I can tell, the water pump doesn't look terribly difficult to change.
My 2.9 had well over 200K on it when I changed it out, it overheated and cracked both heads. Aftermarket heads are the way to go if that problem arrises.
As far as removing the water pump the only real difficult part is the reverse threads on the fan clutch. I would recommend removing the radiator to get the shroud out of the way and then go forth. It's pretty straight forward.
