F150 Down..

97 f150 4.2 4x4 auto 210k miles

So i have been looking at old posts here trying to figure out my problem based on someone elses with no luck thus far. i have the notorious "fuse 24" blown in my engine fuse box. I replaced it and it did not fix the problem..

Truck died a few minutes after hitting a monster pothole. I have checked all the basic stuff, to my knowledge such as fuel shutoff. When i crank the truck over it does not blow the fuse (24) and dosent sound any different than when it was blown in the first place. Check engine light is on solid, but i dont have a scanner. Im sure im leaving something out here, so if anyone has any ideas ill be more than happy to hear you out!

Have you checked for spark and fuel?

The check engine light is usually on solid when the key is on and the engine is not running. But yes, you need to check for spark and fuel to see what is missing.

alright, had spark, but no fuel pressure

checked for power at fuel pump and there was power

tried to start with new 30a fuse, no luck

replaced fuel pump

truck STARTED for 2 seconds tops then died. Re-started with same results; 3rd try, no ignition. same for 4th..

f24 is again BLOWN, i spent an hour following wires to the best of my abilities without finding any shorts yet. If anyone knows of specific shorts that these vehicles are notorious for that could prove to be very helpful

Thanks! Al

ok, one more piece of information that could prove to be useful. Following my exhaust manifolds and driveshaft I found a red wire (pretty thick, and rectangular kind of) that had clearly rubbed on the driveshaft and disconected from something.

I cant find what it was connected to, all I know is that it has a rubber connecter on the end with three holes that would recieve a pin from another connecter

It is located below the drivers seat, but outside the vehicle obviously

So does anyone know what this could be? and could it be part of my problem? I have an aftermarket trailer brake controller on the truck with no way of testing because the truck is dead. Could this be part of it?

so if anyone has any answers for me I would be very grateful, I have run out of daylight today so any ideas overnight would be appreciated for my investigations tomorrow morning

Can you hear the fuel pump kick on when you cycle the key to run? with no fuel pressure the fuel pump should be running. If the pump is running replace the fuel filter it may be plugged solid. If you cant hear the fuel pump running then either the motor is dead, the pump may be siezed, the pre filter is plugged, or the wire that you found chaffed is the +12v to the fuel pump and the pump is not getting power.
From what you have posted it sounds like the +12v to the fuel pump is the chaffed/broken wire. To start with that wire needs to either be replaced or the bad section cut out and a new jumper spliced in, I would start there and see if that fixes the problem.

Fire. that red wire (harness) thing sounds like it has to do with the electric brake controller maybe, as you say it has 3 wires on it.....Just a thought. I would check for 12v back at the fuel pump. Have you checked the fuel pump relay under the hood?
