This has been bugging me for awhile now. I've searched the web using the info printed on this thing, but I have found nothing. I'm not even sure if it's a Ford item or something from the XM or FM booster I have in my Truck. It's located behind the glove box and originally was kind of hidden with cloth black tape that it was held in place with against the passenger side panel right were you see it in the photos.
The info printed on it:
"antennas america inc pcb 00002 ta2" (with a couple of patent numbers)
Thats the Z-coupler that uses the acetone and kerosene that people put in their fuel. It creates a ion vaper when you activate your keyless entry remote that opens the locking mechanism like redford said. Be careful with it.
I suppose I could have been more specific as to why I asked what it was besides simple curiousity.
The item is just dangling from the line/wire you see above it. It looks like it's been cut at the bottom with aprox 6" of wire left at the cut end. You can see it's not attached to anything at the bottom in the photo below as I'm holding it away from the glove box. I cannot find where the bottom end is supposed to attach to. If there is an attachment point some where behind the glove box I'm pretty sure it will take some work finding it maybe having to dis-mantle a good part of dash to get at it. UGH...
It does seem like some kind of antenna (Considering it's printed on it - "antennas america inc"). The key less entry makes sense, but it would be nice to be able to confirm this and maybe fix it if it's a necessary or functional item.
The Truck does have a KARR 4040a alarm system incorporated into the OEM keyless entry which does work with no problems. It also has a Lo-Jack unit installed. Now that I'm thinking about it,,, I have noticed that the remote range is kind of weak.
I gave up trying to find the other end of the cut wire after 2-3 hrs of searching, so it looks like maybe you're the only one that knows what this thing is. I attached the cut end of the wire to a fused wire that runs directly from the fuse panel. I haven't tested it fully yet, but when I turn the key on the unit gets very hot. I will guess that it warms up the acetone and kerosene? Is the acetone and kerosene container inside the fender where the unit is attached to? I have tapped the unit back to were I originally found it. I will be heading out this afternoon for a few hours so I will be see how it holds up.
I know it's probably a stupid question, but what does my Truck use acetone and kerosene for? and is this thing only supposed to activate when I use the keyless entry? if so then I will guess it should be running into a fuse that's on even if the key is off? I will be leaving in about 2 hrs so hopefully I will hear back from you before I leave.
