D44 "Heavy Duty"

So what is the deal with the "heavy duty" version? I robbed one from a 250 to put into my 150, because I needed a 4.10 rato for the front, and it was much easier to find that ratio in a f250. I know it's not, but do people actually consider it a heavy duty rear, or are they just comparing it to the regular D44?

I think the only difference is the 8 lug for the wheels.

That, and the "heavy duty" term people like to attach to anything they want to sell for more $$

It might have the dual piston brakes, which are better, but only if you are going to use 8 lug

There is a front version of the D44, and it is recognized as a Heavy Duty unit. Big hubs, big brakes, yada, yada.
There is also a HD rear axle that is used in later model Jeeps, the Viper, and a few other rides. Pretty worthless really.
Here is alink that describes the D44HD, and how it differs from other units.
http://77cj.littlekeylime.com/Dana44_2.htm

If you bought an 44hd, these are typically low pinion units, and you installed it in a 150, what did you do to mount the radius arms? How is that pinion angle?
D44's did not come in the rear of an F250, so I have to assume we are discussing a front axle.
Did you upgrade the rear axle so you do not have to run 8 lugs up front and 5 in the rear?

75F350, I kept the original TTB housings/radius arms/suspension from the 1985 F150. I only used the 3rd member out of the 1986 F250, it fit perfectly into the housing. I can't remember which axles I used. I believe the F150 axles worked out.

What the heck is a low pinion unit? I chose this rear because it was in one of my parts trucks...basically,because it was free. Will my 150 have a different "pinion angle" than the 250. Is this bad???Because I'm very concerned now...

Thanks for the link!

No buddy, the TTB explaination says a bunch. So many versions of the D44, and they are all a little different. If you have a TTB, then the diff will have a high pinion and use gears accordingly.
In most cases the D44HD refers to the solid axle D44 with extra webbing and large hubs. This would have been an 8 lug version with larger brakes.
As far as I know, all of the D44 TTB diffs are the same. The Larger outers, and hubs found on the 250's might be considered a heavier duty version, but is believe that the R&P is about identical, and the splines were the same, so this would permit the use of the other 44. I do not think anything other than spindles and hubs were any different.
