This is probably a reduntant question, but here goes anyway. Will GT40P heads from 97 - 00 Explorer fit my 92 351w? Will they be a performance improvement? What would be the best intake for my engine?
Yes the heads will fit once you drill out the bolt holes to 1/2", and they will produce more power. The intake that best suites your needs depends on your goals. What are they?
I'd like to add HP and performance without getting too carried away. I've gone to 2.5" exhaust with one cat at the Y. I'm thinking of going to no cat and 3" exhaust. After reading the test results from an article someone posted here from Offroad Mag?? I think, I'm going to insulate the intake and go with the 460 box and K&N drop in filter. Now I'd like to find a few bolt ons, like heads and intake, to increase performance. Pickup is a DD.
Only problem you may have with the P-heads are, spark plug boot to header tube interfernece. The spark plug angle on the p heads are slighty different. I have set for my 94 just haven't put them on yet until I get some headers, and a cam. I was planning on an e-303 with the P-heads, and possiblly swapp to the explorer intake set-up.
You can get lots more out of the stock heads and intake just by letting it breath better. A cam upgrade will make a world of difference to this motor without changing anything else, the Comp Cams 35-255-5 is a known SD friendly cam, as is the one I have. Considering a cam and lifters will cost only about $200 this should be the first thing changed.
Using the GT40P heads might be a bit tricky as they require a specific set of headers when used in a Mustang. I know lots of guys who have don the swap on the mustangs. there are so many that have done this that most of the aftermarked header companys stock headers for just that application. I dont know if they make them for our trucks or not...
I'm collecting parts for spring when my fingers won't freeze in my unheated shop. The last three nights have been -23, -21, -15. It's slowly warming up.
Conanski, what cam would you recommend for my 302 with the mass air setup? I won't be upgrading the cam until I rebuild the engine. I might end up running GT40 heads though. I'm not sure about that yet. If I keep the stock heads what cam do you think is best? I'm looking for mild, its my daily driver.

On the truck in your sig line I suggest staying with the stock cam and adding 1.7 roller rockers.
I just saw this post and wanted to say that I put a 5.0 out of a 98 Explorer in my 95 F-150. I used Ford Stainless Shorty Headers and Had to heat and ding the header tube on the third plug back on the passenger side to get the spark plug boot to clear. Other than that the headers fit fine and bolted to the stock headpipes. I did this while the engine was on the stand before it went in the truck. Also added 1.7 crane roller rockers and underdrive pulleys and a new dual exhaust with twin cats and flowmasters and the truck runs excellent and has pretty decent torque for a short stroke. It is 2 wheel drive and has 3.55 gears. I was thinking of trying 4.10 gears just to see what difference they would make. Anyone running that combo? ( 5.0, automatic, 2WD, 4.10 gears) thanks Rich
