1976 F250 4x4,front drive shaft extremely sloppy.I replaced all u-joint greased everything, the slopyness is right at the slip yolk.It definately need's to be replaced. What can I do?Try and find a good used one?Can I buy a new one?Get one made?Do I have to replace the entire driveshaft?NP205 trnsfr cse FYI.
You do not have to replace the entire shaft, but you do need to inspect the splines on the shaft to make sure you do not have any damage to them. They can twist, and wear.
Any good driveshaft shop can help you determine whether or not you can just install another slip joint.
If you look for a used one, a carefull inspection will be in order. You wil also need to count the splines to determine if it will fit. These come in a veriety of sizes, and lengths so make sure you find an exact replacement, or you could damage your shaft. Too long, and it could bottom out under suspension compression. Too short, and the splines could pull out, so measure first, or take the unit with you to compare.
If you have trouble finding some, I have several. Pm me with dimensions, and I can send you some pics I run larger joints in my trucks, but I keep these old parts just in case I run into someone that may need them.
The splines on the drive shaft look good.I think it's the inner part of the yolk.I will drop it out again, and take it to a specialist.I'm pretty sure it's just the yolk though. When I find a guy,I will get the the measurement's and spline count at the same time and PM you 75f350,See if you got what I need.Thank's.
That would be nice.I have to drive a minimum of an hour to get to the nearest wrecker.I'v been on the phone will all of them, not much around for the part's Im looking for.I've started looking for whole trucks privately.

Oh I see.... I had a friend who put a chevy S-10 front drive shaft in his 79 F-250 .It sounds funny but he did it and it worked he Pulled stuff around in 4X4 and he use to mud the truck with big tires on and it held up to all the abuse....Good luck anyway

got rid of all my vibrations............yokes were scarry sloppy........should have done it sooner

Right on!It sure tightened up the drive train when I did the u-joint's.Does the front drive shaft turn when I'm in 2hi,with the divorced np205 trnsfr cse?I think it does.

It should not turn if the hubs are unlocked and the t-case is in 2wd.
You will get some motion from it, but it does not usually spin at the same rate as the rear, like it would if it was engaged.
Little bit sloppy is not too bad, but if you wheel it hard, it has a better chance of getting damaged because it does not fit properly.
You also run the risk of damaging the splines on the shaft if it fails.
