Question Distributor/Timing question

Ok, I want to know for sure which direction is advancing the timing and retarding the timing? Is it just common sense that turning the distributor clockwise (while the firing order is clockwise on the Dist.) to advance the timing? and opposite for retarding the timing. Somebody please elaborate more on this subject.

You're backwards there... turning it in the direction of the firing order will cause the spark to come later in the engine rotation and will retard your timing. Turning it the other way will advance it.

The key is Before as in "BTDC" on a Ford. Though you are moving towards 10 degrees, it is actually moving towards a negative setting. When you advance the timing, you are actually "advancing" or moving backwards from Top Of Dead Center to cause the mixture to ignite sooner.

Or something like that

The Vacuum advance is the key to remembering.

What ever way the vacuum advance is pointing is the way the rotor rotates.

To RETARD the timing your rotate the cap away from the V/A

"Making the spark arrive later"
