What is the Purpose

What in the world do those cones in the hoses from the air cleaner to the throttle plate do. They look to me like one H**l of a restriction I cut mine off and the truck runs easier and is about 7 mph faster in my improvised 1/4 mile acceleration test. Anybody have the scoop as to what FORD's Better Idea was on this one.

Those cones are air silencers, supposed to quiet down the sound of rushing air into the engine. Why, I dont know

The manufactures can only have so much sound, in decibles's @ 3 ft. distance(I think) from the vehical. The less noise coming from the engine compartment, the louder the exhaust/driveline can be and still pass EPA sound levels. Intake tracts tend to "honk" louder without the restriction (run's better too!).
