I have a1997 exp. with a 5.4 , 125,000 miles. While driving down the freeway it died as if it ran out of gas, 1 month ago I replaced the fuel pump and filter for a different no start condition. Checked fuel pressure 45psi,spark at all plugs,no codes, all sensor readings seem correct. If you hold throttle all the way to the floor it will run at about 300 rpms. I tried a TPS , ECT , I temporarily plugged off the IAC and EGR to rule out them. If you let a vacuum line pull in fuel from a can it runs fine as long as you supply fuel. I know it is a lack of fuel spray from the injectors but not sure what is causing it.
Since it runs when you supply fuel from a can, it means there is a problem with your fuel delivery system. Check your fuel pump relay and then see if you're getting power to the fuel pump.
