i recently bought a truck and i am wondering what motor it has in it. the guy i bought the truck from told me that it had a 460 in it, my friend is convinced that it has a 351 in it. i looked at the sticker on the valve cover and it says it is a 7 point something litre (can't read the second number). i know that anything that size must be a 460, cause a chevy 350 is a 5.7 litre so a 351 must be comprable. i know that this probably makes no sense but please help. if you know any quick way to tell the difference or easy ways to identify each motor please help. tahnks in advance.

The way I identify a 460 is to look at the exhaust manifold bolts. If they are inline, it's a 429-460. If they are diagonal to each other, it's a 351m/400. Another way to tell them apart are the valve cover bolts. The 429/460 has 7 bolts, and I believe the 351m/400 have 8 bolts. The 429/460 has an aluminum front cover (timing cover) and the 351m/400 doesn't (it's cast into the block)

 

Don't forget the Thermostat housing.

On a 351M/400 it comes out of the front of the block
On a 429/460 it comes out of the intake manifold.

Yup, 7.6 litres - 460 cubic inches, unless it's mine...that would make it 472 cubic inches....
