I have an 89 f150 with a 300/6 with about 350.000 km's. I noticed a while back that the rad hose had alot of pressure on it and that i was loosing coolant but not into the oil. first off i changed the rad cap with the one out of my other parts truck (89 f150 302) will this make a diffrence to the pressure? and what would the exhaust smell like if it was putting anti-freeze through it? or how else could i tell?
Do you ever catch a whiff of coolant? First check your hoses. Make sure you don't see any coolant sitting on the block in any crevices. I had this problem where someone didn't put a hose on right before I had the truck.
Make sure you don't smell coolant when you turn on the heat.
If you have any white steam coming out your exhaust that smells kind of sweet, then you should worry about a blown headgasket. Although, even if you don't, it's not to say you still don't have a slight rupture in the gasket.
You could always take it to a shop and have them do a sniffer test in the rad. We do this a good bit and it is pretty acurate. What they do is go to manual mode on the tail pipe tester and use it to sniff for HC's. Oh crap maybe they dont have tailpipe testers were ur at i forgot not everyone has this lol, but if you do have it in your area might be worth a try.
