help changing/troubleshooting EPC solinoid

Looking for some insight as to how to change this component out. I pulled a P-1748 error code and was nudged to check the connecting wires and/or replace this component.

But I don;t have access to a manual and am in the middle of Baja Sur. I do have a resource headed to SoCal day after tomorrow who can bring me back a replacement unit early next week...but I am not sure how to pull or replace.

Any tips or pointers to a manual? Is this a fairly easy task or are special tools needed? At best I am a lazy mechanic who can barely do my own maintenace and have only basic hand tools available. I may however have access to a pit to assist in working under the vehicle. My local dealer is pathetic and I won't let them touch my truck again after wasting an entire day there getting BS'd ;-(

TIA for any help or suggestions.

If you are refering to the EBPV solinoid, there is a fork holding it in place. I think it may be a screw. Look over the top of the turbo with a mirror and you will see it. That's all that's holding it in. If you are having problems with it and are out of pocket, unplug it and forget it. But it's not needed unless you are in a super cold place. If that's not what you are talking about, then I have no idea what a EPC solinoid is.

Rubber Duck:

He has the right codes: P-1748 (1) (2) EPC Fault
p-1748 (3) (4) EPC Malfunction

But I can't find anything on a EPC.

I know that you have a '97 250 so tell us a little about your truck and what symptons you were experencing before it quit or stopped or????

So far I haven't come up with a lot but some indications that it may be connected to your tranny. Is your tranny an auto or manual? It also may be a electronic pressure control but as of right now don't know where.

Well buddy it appears to be a tranny part. OEM # 4T65E or 4T40E

My guess is that it is on the side of the tranny. It should have wires running to it, can't be to many of those.

Discount it will be in the neighborhood of $44.79
Buy it at Ford.....Probably need to float a loan.

This is the best I can do for ya.

Tried to rep ya Rog, but wouldn't let me. Good job man. I'm not an auto guy so I would have never figured that out.

EPC = electronic pressure control solenoid. Basically it regulates transmission oil pressure. What are your symptoms?

4T65E and 4T40E are GM front wheel drive transmissions.

X2
EPC solenoid is part of the solenoid pack.
You will have to drop the trans pan to replace it.

My '97 CCSB F-250 4x4 PSD has a E4OD auto tranie( +/- 160K on odometer ). It is running as of this update.

This problem began when the OD light on the shift lever began blinking and the trannie would not shift beyond 3rd gear or below 2nd gear, so I am currently manually shifting from 1-2-and D which seems to work ok( not using for towing ).

I visited my local Baja Ford dealer( truely pathetic ) and they offered little help other then verifying the codes and saying parts would be 4 weeks and was probalbly a full trannie swap.

I am a bit confused about OEM # 4T65E or 4T40E replacement parts...are these for my truck or a GM front wheel drive vehicle?

Would there be anywhere online I could find the swap proceedure for this task?

Thank to all the help...

Link is the part.
I would not be changing it without testing wiring and solenoid first.

A part change may not solve your issue.
If it coded 1746 or 1747 i might gamble with a pack change without testing.
You coded 1748. Its a malfunction code. First you have to check wiring and connectors. Ohm them/test for shorts and ground/check pins ect.

How are your meter skills?
