any tips on buying tire chains...?

...or are they all essentially the same? I've never had to own or install any, but I'm heading up to Reno tomorrow, and I expect that they may become appropriate, if not mandated by the CHP.

Any words of wisdom? Thanks.

If your truck is fairly stock, Z cables are better then chain.

Around here, 4x4s are usually exempt from the chain requirement. I still have a set in my truck, just in case, but I never had to use it. If the snow is very deep, the terrain is very steep. or you go off of plowed roads, they can be very useful, even on a 4x4.

If you not sure that you will use it, some retailers will sell you one with a buyback guarantee if you didn't use it, or you can get a cheap cable from WalMart. If you're certain that you'll be using it, then get a good one like the Z-cable.

I'd never heard of these Z-cables. Are they available in places like Napa or Pep Boys?

If you're taking the truck in your signature, you don't need chains. If you insist on using them anyway because you don't know how to drive in the snow, then you NEED them on all four tires unless you plan on leaving it in 2wd for some strange reason.

Driving in the snow isn't hard. You just need to take it easy, drive slower, leave plenty of stopping room, and don't turn sharply.

OK, thanks, Andy. I'll leave without them, and if I get somewhere that they require them, I'll buy them up there.
