I am building an offroad truck and have a decision on gear ratios to make. I have a 1986 F350 4x4, with small block C6 and I think its a 1356 case. I have a smooth housing Dana70 from a 1984 F250 diesel to put in the rear. My 4 wheeling buddy has a great deal for me on a Dana 70 powerlock and I can have 4.56 or 5:13 gear for same price. I need to buy my front gears new. Probably 36 or 38 belted swampers.
I am wondering if anyone has had 5:13 dana 60 reverse cut gears, and if they have had any problems. Seems to me like there is only a few teeth on the pinion. I may be just a little paranoid as the lowest gears I've ever used before were 4.10s. Oh and I am using the detroit locker from my old 60.
This truck will be used on the farm, as well as off road trips. It will be licenced and insured. Might even consider a 5spd trans down the road. I've always had good luck with smaller power but strong axles.
Advice/opinions would be great, exspecially if you have used 5:13 front gears yourself.
Your question or concern really has to do with the pinon vertical offset (distance measured in inches where the pinion meets the ring gear vertically in relationship to the ring gears' centerline.) This is actually very poor on a Dana axle, but there is nothing you can do. A larger diameter ring gear helps reduce this problem, but we need to stay on topic.
You should have little concern with the strength of a 5.13:1 gear set in your aolication. I have been running a set in one truck for a few years with no troubles.
I also have 5.38's in another ride, and have had no issues, and this truck gets driven like a rental. It survives with 44" tires, and decent horsepower.
The weak point is simply a design issue with regarrds to the pinion offset, and not so much with gear selection with regards to this Dana assembly.
Run the 5.13's, you will not be disappointed.
Thanks thats the kind of input I'm looking for. I've never had any trouble with dana axles or r/p only with ujoint/clip failures. I've never run anything deeper than 4:10 though. I like the idea of the 5:13s as the truck won't ever see a divided highway.
I am trying to use up some of the trucks/parts I already have but the Dana 70 detroit locker I have will only go down to the 4:10 ratio. Otherwise I would use the rear locker too.
Keep the input coming. I need this truck done by middle of April. I don't want to leave it all to the last minute, thats how you get problems.
