Well is was really cold here (-10 with the wind chill) in WNY Sunday morning, we were leaving a hotel after a banquet we attended and the truck wouldn't start. I've been reading all the "Cold Starting" threads so I cycled the GPR a couple times but the batteries were to dead to roll the truck over fast enough even while jumping it with two trucks. After a buddy of mine took me to Walmart for a couple of new batteries it started right up. On really cold days I get a hissing sound and the boost pressure zeros out, I assume that is the waste gate malfunctioning. What should I do to fix this problem or is it normal?
The hissing sound is more than likely the EBPV(exhaust back pressure valve) closing some. If the batteries were real bad not even jumping would have helped my other truck had the same problem one time I drove it and everything seemed fine went to leave and nothing both battieries were shot replaced them truck start fine and no more problems. I tried even leaving the jumping truck hooked up for an hour and nothing that was when I check the battieries while trying to start because they showed good but under load had nothing.

The hissing you are hearing is normal, it is not the wastegate malfunctioning.
During cold weather the EBPV(exhaust back pressure valve) is activated by the PCM. This activation places a small load on the engine to facilitate a faster warm up. the PCM also commands the idle to raise a few hundred RPMs(depending on temps), and it will sound as though the valve is cycling, Hisssssssssss, purrrr, hisssssss, purrr. (some have equated this noise to a sounding like a Jet engine )
i know how the battery thing goes as well ther budget already been there myself. had to get jumped two times after work and decided that was enough!!!!!
