3rd gear...

I got an 87 f250 with the 4.9 six in it and I have the 4 speed transmission, when I go down a hill in 3rd gear, if my hand is not on the shifter then the truck will pop out of gear and into neutral.... It is really weird....

what is wrong with my truck guys, yall ever heard of that?????

Probably a synchro.

is the synchro in the tranny or where? I am assuming you gotta drop it to fix it?

They are part of the internals.

mine does that too, although it's 302 & 4 speed with OD. been that way as long as i owned it ('bout 3 years now) never popped out under load though, thankfully.....

I have an '89 F150 w/ the Mazda 5-speed. I have the same problem in the same gear. Although these transmissions are completely different creatures (from what I can find out) the guy I took it too had a theory that it had a bent shifter fork. Who knows though, I never have fixed it.
