Did I kill it?

OK...So I have pulled many people out of ditches so far this winter...and today was nothing out of the norm when neighbor's F250 slid into a ditch on his property. So I hook and we give it a few tugs...now mind you, there is a pretty steep incline between us...I am on flat, but snow and ice packed driveway. So I am spinning tires in 4-low. Drive - reverse - drive - reverse...etc. Well at one point when I was spinning my tires...I let off the gas and suddenly I heard a, (excuse the typed sounded effect), whoosh, whoosh, whoosh whoosh. It got quieter as the last one sounded...then the engine died. I panicked thinking I broke it...killed the turbo or something. But she started right back up...a couple more tugs and I got him out. Well I went on to the store, and all seems fine...sounds the same...drives and performs the same....I checked under the hood and nothing seems out of the ordinary. What happened? Did I overrev and not realize it so the engine shut down?

It might be the combination of the turbo stalling and releasing pressure as you came to a sudden idle when the engine was under load. The 6.0s do that, especially when plowing and pushing up piles of snow. Chuff Chuff Chuf... Stalling, now that may be something due to the ICP being high and not being able to dump enough pressure fast enough to return to a normal idle. If it started back up i wouldn't really worry about it BILLY BOB

I'll agree, going from a high load to the engine to nothing will give you that noise. When you let off suddenly all the pressure that was created on the intake side is pushing back on the turbo, resulting in the turbo stalling since there is no exhaust pushing on it from the other direction. Same concept of the turbo flutter at high rpms/loads. A one time occurence won't hurt it, but if you do it often it can have adverse affects on the turbo.

Thanks for the info! OK So I will have to be careful about that then. I really can't afford to have to replace my turbo. It's the first titme that it has ever done this so WHEW!!!
