backfiring/smog questions

Ok heres my problem. My 302 has a 4 barrel weiand non-egr intake on it with a holley 4160 600 cfm carb. I have a 2" swirl-torque carb spacer that i put on a while back, worked alright, no problems there. I realized i needed an EGR spacer to pass the visual check (it isnt workin cuz of the intake) of smog. so i go ahead and slap a 4 barrel plate from a 460 on it paired with a 1/2" wood spacer from Summit to fill in that lovely vacuum leak. NOW whenever i start my truck the choke comes on when cold normal startup. Whenever i hit the gas it comes to about 1500 RPM and backfires! now before this extra inch of carb spacing it worked fine. timing is normal (dont know if i should back it off or anything) and its basically a stock configuration

1.should i take the carb spacers off and use 4-hole gaskets and just the egr spacer?
2.do i need the egr spacer?

thanks for your help guys. i am stumped on this one.

Sounds like there is still a vacuum leak there somewhere. See if you can find an EGR plate from a 83-85 5.0 MustangGT.
