When its this cold use No 1 if you can especially if your truck sits out an is not plugged in. This newer ULSD fuel is more suscetible to gelling then the older fuel. Any restriction in your fuel filter will show up pretty quick in this cold weather. Another tip park your truck away from the prevailing wind. If its from the north park it south. You get the idea.. Keep her plugged in if you can.
Plugging the truck in and/or using a lighter oil is not going to do anything to prevent fuel from gelling, which was clearly your problem.
You may have gotten a batch of bio. A good anti-gel to me is a really good idea, no matter what kind of fuel you use. You never know sometimes what you're going to get. I've used Stanadyne and I'm using Opti-Lube XPD now. Everyone seems to like Power Service, but the grey bottle doesn't have anti-gel, only the white bottle.
So far our temps have not gone below about 10 degree's and I haven't had any problems.
didn't intend to use BIO, pump I filled at didn't state it was BIO or I wouldn't have used it. I'm not sure if it is bio or not but sure looks like it?
Moisture in the fuel will also cause it to gel at a higher temperature than normal. You could have gotten a bad tank of fuel. Try a different station.
I second the HOWES. I will swear by that stuff even if I gel up tonight. Never had a prob. One thing I did notice, kind of off topic but I would pass it on, that every time I used Lucas fuel treatment( I know, no anti gelling agents, I used both lucas and howes when I did) I wound up with at least one injector going south. The same thing with the oil stabilizer. I thought it would be as good in the HEUI fuel system as in gas burners, saddly mistaken. That stuff is toooooo thick. By the way I use the Howes year around. It works for me.
That's the problem with Howes...I've only found it in truckstops. That would be ok but my closest one is about an hours drive out. If you go online to order you have to add shipping costs to the total.
I've used PowerService since my trucks first fillup with no problems. My Blackstone reports keep coming back with glowing results so I really have no reason to change.
