Thumbs down Timing?

I have a 99 eddie bauer expedition with about 105000 which blew some plugs a while back just got around to putting the engine back together after getting heads resleeved. Is it possible to set timing withoutt he tools? My brother found (or thought he did) directions we put it back together and started it and runs like garbage so its back apart and I dont have tools to realign cams and crank. is it pssible to do it without the tools...

Thank you in advance

Chris

The engine can be retimed without any special tools. The crank gear, cam sprockets have marks you line up with the gold links on the timing chains. Be careful not to bend the valves, this is an interference engine.

5.4 or 4.6? Romeo or windsor? Also see if you have two or three gold links on your chains. If you have three links two of them will be next to each other.

  1. Put the crankshaft mark in the 6:00 position. Carefully turn the cams while feeling for interference. You may need to slightly turn the crankshaft to get the cam where you need it because of pistons and valves colliding.

Timing mark on RH cam at approx. 11:00 and LH at approx. 1:00Position the single link on the crankshaft mark and the cam sprocket mark between the two gold links.

Ok one more time just so I know I got it... The crank sprocket with the keyway or the mark on the sprocket at 6 ( does it matter that both sides of that sprocket have marks that are in different location???) The passenger side at 11 and the driver side at 1 with this done the links will just line right up.....How long does it take to mess up motor if timing was bad? Ran like garbage didnt really let run long..

I strongly suggest you refer to a service manual. Incorrect timing can bend all the valves and become very expensive.

    This might help a little.

    µ 25. CAUTION:
Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result.

    CAUTION:
Do not compress the ratchet assembly. This will damage the ratchet assembly.

Compress the tensioner plunger, using an edge of a vise.

µ 26. Using a small screwdriver or pick, push back and hold the ratchet mechanism.

µ 27. While holding the ratchet mechanism, push the ratchet arm back into the tensioner housing.

µ 28. Install a paper clip into the hole in the tensioner housing to hold the ratchet assembly and plunger in during installation.

    29. Remove the tensioner from the vise.

    4.6L engine
µ 30. If the copper links are not visible, mark one link on one end and one link on the other end, and use as timing marks.

    5.4L engine
µ 31. If the copper links are not visible, mark two links on one end and one link on the other end, and use as timing marks.

    Windsor Engine
µ 32. Loosely install the Camshaft Holding Tools on both camshafts (6250).

µ 33. Install the timing chain guides.

µ 34. Slightly loosen the Camshaft Holding Tool to allow slight camshaft movement. Rotate the LH camshaft with the Camshaft Positioning Tool until the timing mark is approximately at 12 o'clock.

Rotate the RH camshaft with the Camshaft Positioning Tool until the timing mark is approximately at 11 o'clock. Tighten the Camshaft Holding Tool to maintain camshaft pre-positioning.

    µ 35. CAUTION:
Do not turn the engine over with the Camshaft Positioning Tool or damage to the camshaft sprocket or the bolt may occur.

Use the (A) Camshaft Positioning Tool to position the (B) camshaft.

    µ 36. CAUTION:
Unless otherwise instructed, at no time when the timing chains are removed and the cylinder heads are installed is the crankshaft or camshaft to be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur.

    CAUTION:
Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise only. Do not rotate past position shown or severe piston and/or valve damage can occur.

Position the crankshaft with the Crankshaft Holding Tool.

    37. Remove the Crankshaft Holding Tool.

µ 38. Position the inner crankshaft sprocket with the long hub facing outward.

µ 39. Install the LH timing chain to the crankshaft sprocket, aligning the one copper link on the timing chain with the slot on the crankshaft sprocket.

    µ 40. Note:
Make sure the upper half of the timing chain is below the tensioner guide dowel. If necessary, use the Camshaft Positioning Tool to adjust.

    Note:
If necessary, adjust the camshaft sprocket slightly to obtain timing mark alignment.

Position the timing chain on the camshaft sprocket with the two copper chain links and the camshaft sprocket timing mark aligned.

    µ 41. CAUTION:
The camshaft sprocket (6256) can jump time if the Camshaft Holding Tool is not secured.

    Note:
Be sure the copper chain link and crankshaft sprocket timing mark are aligned.

    Note:
The lower half of the timing chain must be positioned above the dowel.

Position the outer camshaft sprocket and the RH timing chain with the long hub of the sprocket facing inward.

    42. Note:
If necessary, adjust the camshaft sprocket slightly to obtain timing mark alignment with the Camshaft Positioning Tool.

Position the RH timing chain on the camshaft sprocket. Make sure the two copper-colored links align with the camshaft sprocket timing mark.

µ 43. As a post-check, verify correct alignment of all timing marks.

µ 44. Position the LH and RH timing chain tensioner arms on the dowel pins. Position the timing chain tensioner assemblies, and install the bolts.

µ 45. Remove both the RH and LH pins from the timing chain tensioner (6L266) assembly.

µ 46. Remove the Camshaft Holding Tools.

    µ 47. Note:
    Romeo Timing Procedure

Install the timing chain guides (6K297).

1 Position LH timing chain guide.

2 Install and tighten the bolts.

3 Position the RH timing chain guide.

4 Install and tighten the RH bolts.

µ 48. Install the timing chains (6268) and crankshaft sprockets (6306).

1 Slide the (A) crankshaft sprocket onto the (B) crankshaft, aligning the copper link on the timing chain with the dot on the crankshaft sprocket.

2 Position the timing chain over the camshaft sprocket, aligning the copper link with the dot on the camshaft sprocket.

µ 49. Make sure that the (A) copper marks on the timing chains are lined up with the corresponding dots on the crankshaft sprockets and camshaft sprockets.

µ 50. Make sure that the (A) camshaft sprocket keyway is 90 degrees from the (B) valve cover mounting surface.

µ 51. Make sure that the (A) RH crankshaft sprocket is on the front of the (B) LH crankshaft sprocket with the long hubs facing each other.

µ 52. Position the LH and RH timing chain tensioner arm (6L253) on the dowel pins.

µ 53. Position the RH timing chain tensioner and install the timing bolts.

µ 54. Position the LH timing chain tensioner and install the bolts.

µ 55. Remove both the RH and LH retaining pins from the timing chain tensioners.

µ 56. Remove the (A) Cam Positioning Tool and the Camshaft Positioning Tool Adapters from the (B) camshaft.

µ 57. Position the crankshaft sensor ring on the crankshaft.

    µ 58. Note:
If the bolt is not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M5B392-A. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness or four minutes whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

Apply a bead of silicone along the head-to-block surface and the oil pan-to-block surface as specified.

l Use Silicone Gasket and Sealant F7AZ-19554-EA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A4.

µ 59. Install a new engine front cover gasket on the engine front cover. Position the engine front cover. Install the fasteners finger-tight.
