Hey guys, I need help. 01 7.3 PDS. Its was about 3 degrees above last night, and stupid me didnt plug my truck in. I went out to start it today, and it turned over just fine-really fast and normal. I cycled the GS's a few times and when I turned it over again, it acted like the batteries were very low. I JUST replaced the batteries a few weeks ago, Im thinking its the starter. I need to know if this is a common sign of a failing starter. I DONT need to get stranded somewhere.
I know it sounds like low batteries, but I checked them, and they are about 10.5V while cranking and recovers quickly.
It seems to do this kinda often, and will either turn over normal, or slow. kinda whenever it feels like ticking me off!!! What are your thoughts???
Thanks in advance, Aaron
Potentially dying starter motor...
Do you have an oil leak near the starter, or any oily build up on the casing? If so, oil leaks can cause premature starter failure. Try taking the starter off, and spraying it out with "electra motive" electric parts cleaner, get it inside the housing, swish it around then dump it out a couple times. Then let it dry out for 15 to 20 min, reattach it and try again. If that fixed it, you got oil in your starter motor, and now it is only a matter of time till it fails. If this is the case, I would buy a starter motor and keep it in the truck along with a ratchet set just in case.
What batteries did you put in the truck? I would take them to autozone for testing just in case it is the batteries. With more and more stuff coming from china, quality all across the spectrum of consumer products, is slipping. You may have a defective bunch.
Listen to iasrap...never assume a new part is good. Test carefully before buying; buy brand names, and still never trust any part. What parts aren't
coming from China yet may be made by workers who are pushed to make
more parts faster and with cheaper components. Welcome to the new world
order. Be glad you can afford a pickup at all.
Next time it has problems starting, hit the solenoid with a hammer. If it starts better, then its the starter. Might sound crazy, but I've seen starters not turn over or engage at all, then a whap with a hammer gets them to run like a top for a couple more times.
I would refrain from mixing violence and vehicles before testing a proven troubleshooting method. While it may work, since you do not necessarily know where or how hard to hit, you may cause more harm than good.
