got the motor runnin on the stand, WAS runnin great. i dont do anything, go to crank it up and show my dad i got it runnin(was out of town) and boom, starts runnin rich as hell. 10 feet away you can smell raw fuel. talked to a mechanic, he said first to check the pump. took it apart tonight, cleaned it out, everything seemed to be in working order. then i go to crank it up again, and its blowin ***** of flame out of the carb and the mufflers. im so frustrated right now i cant think much, but what should i look for? could it be the carb? too much fuel pressure? even though pump is set at 7 psi? thanks for any info
well, like i said, the motor was runnin fine one day then rich as hell the next with no changes to the carb. could something have made its way in to the carb and got one of the metering rods stuck wide open? i just dont know.....argh
Seven pounds fuel pressure is borderline for your stock carb. I'd put a Holley fuel regulator on it and drop it down to 5-6 lbs. max. Your stock mechanical pump was probably only producing 5 lbs. max for a street vehicle. The second option is you could have got something in the carb during your initial assembly such as a piece of teflon tape, dirt, etc.
but I'd guess the fuel pressure is the main culprit. Deen
