My dash was butchered or I would have used the radio delete plate and hid a newer radio in the glove box or under the seat.
I deleted the speaker grill and replaced it with a three gauge panel and a new key below and left of that.
Outside my truck is mostly stock. Its lowered with steel rims and modern V8.
I would keep the dash stock otherwise.
I think I have some pics in my gallery of my dash.
there's a few Aussies on here....appeal to them
otherwise, I'd have to get one of my buddies to go down to "pick-a-part" and grab one for you, since Im still in Japan.
as for 'faking' a radio...a car audio mate of mine sometimes drills a tiny hole in the face of an original radio to mount a cheap "remote eye" to control a completely hidden modern unit.
Great pics, all...I've been convinced to wait for a stock radio. I really didn't want to cut my dash at all, and the '62 Falcon radio has squared corners, instead of the rounded. It would look "OK", but not right. And since the corner would have to be repaired, I'll wait for a stock one. There are several vendors on 'bay that "repair" the radios, but they want $150 to $300 for one. A bit out of my price range, for something that will probably never be turned on.
Oz - do you mean the Falcon type radio, the one I posted, are $20 Aus down there? What would a stock truck one go for?
It seems a lot of trucks didn't have radios, but had the delete plates. I have one of those and that will suffice for now (thanks, FTE!!). I'm just always thinking, and trying to save a buck or two, here and there...
There do seem to be a LOT of different radios, being sold as "correct" for the '51 - they are all similar, but have little differences. Color of *****, the ***** themselves, pushbuttons are different, etc, etc. I really just want something to plug the hole that looks somewhat decent. The delete does that for now.
Thanks for the offer! I have two, one very nice, that I bought with an ashtray, to get the cast piece at the top of the ashtray. I had several ashtrays, but the top piece is another one of those things, that never seems to make it through the years. Not sure if they got loose, then came off, or actually broke - but it seems like for every 5 ashtrays, there's only one piece of the cast trim.
I am really pretty fortunate, that my truck was so "original" to begin with. There were a lot of parts missing, radiator, carb and linkage, etc, but the truck wasn't butchered, just taken apart, and I'm sure one of the PO's just didn't give all the parts, when it was sold. It's not like someone started to part it out, the missing parts are all "similar" - like a box of carb parts, with carb, linkage, filter, etc, and a pile with radiator and stuff. But, I've managed to find just about everything - I am supposed to have a rear bumper coming, just got the radiator and cap, carb and linkage. Now, I'm getting ready to put it all back together. The tranny goes on the bench tomorrow for a check-up, and if it checks out, maybe start putting things back together...
Ok sorry they aren't straight on but they are passenger side. I put pics in my gallery of both my trucks 51 and 52, the 51 has the radio in it and the 52 has the FORD insert. If you are looking for a radio to fit in let me know and we can talk if nothing else hopefully it just helps with what your looking for.. latter Casey.
I have some outstanding photo's of my 51 dash. A couple are right into the radio area. I also have a great photo of the speaker plate out of the truck. I probably have a photo of what you need since I've taken tons during my dash restoration. Unfortunately, I can't post attachments. So, if yo uwill write to me directly at sandidande@***.net I'll send you what I have. Please be sure to let me know what your real e-mail address is. Maybe you would like to post the photo's. I even mounted a 51 wind up clock in the ash tray. It looks great. I won't cut holes in th edash so I just bought 2 ash trays. I hope I can be of help. Dan
Uhhhh, I probably could, but I'm fairly new to the FTE site and really haven't figured out how to do it yet.
I'd love to show off some of my stuff. Can you give me some step by steps on how to start the gallery? I read the post on posting pictures on the first page of the forum, tried it and needed medical attention - tee hee. (And I used to fly F-14s - until that oxygen starvation thing).
Anyway, if you can help, I have tons of great pictures an lessons learned photos to share if I can get them on.
