Shakey Brakes

I have had my 2000 F250 4X4 Powerstroke for about 3000 miles. In that short time the brakes have started shaking rather hard when I stop. This is the first 4 wheel disc brake set up I have had. Is there something about them I should know or is this just normal wear. I haven't looked at the brakes yet, but I guess I need to have the rotors turned or replaced and new pads. Just wondering if this has been known as a frequent thing.
Thanks

I'm guessing warped rotors. I have seen several other complaints about this. I've never had this issue, and haven't seen it on any of my work trucks either.

How bad is the shake?

i had the same issue with mine. just tell the tire shops not to run the lugs up with the gun and have then torqued by hand and not with the sticks. then get the rotors turned and while your in there lube the slide pins.

Fix the Reason first.

Hey there,

I have this problem, and it has been discussed in the forums extensively. You could search for those threads.

Now, one reason for this to happen is if the glide or slide pins on the caliper are not greased. This should be part of your periodic maintenance. These are the pins covered with a rubber, bellows-type cover that allow the caliper to squeeze the rotor while applying even pressure.

The theory is if these are not lubricated, then one or both may stick, and apply uneven pressure to the rotor, causing it to warp. You just pull them out and shove grease in the hole and make sure they are not going to stick and at least THAT possibility is gone.

Yes, you can turn or replace your rotors. I would have them turned first, if possible. I had a problem with that because most shops don't have a thang to fit our large rotors. Why buy a new rotor that may warp fairly quickly if you haven't found the reason?

Most people say excessive heat. Well, heat may contribute, but is that all? I don't think so. My rubber bellows were broke so I had to replace them. So far so good, and I have had the rotors turned twice before I tried this fix.

Good luck,

Donnie

What are the total miles on the truck? I'm just about at 100k and I'm in the middle of replacing the rotors & pads.

My truck had the "shake" and I ended up getting my rotors cryoed. Some on here recommend getting the Hawk pads and rotors that are treated also.

I've had too many come backs with turned rotors to the point that I won't do that anymore.
Replace them only, but like mentioned earlier, make sure that everything else is good.
Rebuild the calipers, etc.

I just fixed the same problem the pins were fine well greased and the bellows were good. $20.00 to turn both rotors and every thing is now fine.
