I have a 2000 F150, 4.6L, auto, 4x4. Today I tried to start it and nothing. Starter has been making a different sound for the past few days. So I climbed up under it and found the starter just sitting there loose. The bottom bolt was just setting in the starter body and the unit itself was able to be moved around very loosely. I tried to tighten the bolt but it seemed to be striped out of the bellhousing area. Its dark at this time and I will check it out better tomorrow hopefully, depending on the weather here. I also purchased an Aftermarket Warranty which includes the electrical and drivetrain system. So hopefully it will cover the repairs. Just wondering if anybody else experienced this type of problem with the mounting holes and the correct fix if that is the case. Thanks.
i'd have whoever honors your warranty look at it. did you or someone else try to engage the starter while the engine was running? maybe the bolts worked themselves loose and the repeated torq of regular starter useage caused one to pull the threads out. If the warranty isn't honored it shouldn't be too hard to pull the starter off and put a helicoil in the bad hole.
Thanks Superduty, I was just wondering how hard it would be to put helicoils in the other 2 holes ? The bottom bolt hole looks as though it would be able to be drilled out and a bolt and nut installed ok to hold it. We are in western Pa and its about 15F outside and the windchill about 0F here. So I'll just probably get it taken to the shop and see whatsup next week.
if the other two are fine i'd leave them be and put the helicoil in the bad hole. use some blue loctite thread locker when you go back in with them, that should help them stay put.
The garage fixed it today. 1 bolt hole was completely damaged in the threads and the other 2 where able to be cleaned out and chased and reused. The terminal end from the battery was corroded off and a new terminal connector was installed. A new starter and solenoid was installed and appears to be running good at this time. The aftermarket extended warranty company paid about 85% of the complete bill !!!! I must of picked the right warranty company
