Planning to head out to DSC in Anza Sat morning to look at a coupla 428 cranks. Wont have a mag machine handy so was hoping some folks can toss up their advice on how they review a crank in the field. (Recall Carl mentioned the cracked ones he had didnt have a nice ring when tapped with a hammer?) I have my caliper and am aware on the journal radius etc.
You could use Dye Penetrant if you like. Not quite as sensitive as mag particle but it will detect cracks. It comes in aerosol cans, cleaner, penetrant, developer.
Yeah well, he never called, never responded to either email yesterday so ?? He might be selling stuff I can trust but his customer service is lacking IMO. Guess thats the price of a one man show ?
If you're talkin about Dennis of DSC in CA, he is absolutely horrible to get a hold of but when you do, he gets right on the ball. He sold me a great product.
The easiest way to check the crank was already mentioned, tap it with a hammer. A cracked crank will go "thud", a good cast crank will have a deep "ping" to it, and a good forged crank will have a high pitched "ring" that will just keep going and going and going.
Doesn't have to be anything crazy, a 4oz ball peen or tack hammer is plenty. The best way to do it is set a flywheel on the ground, set the crank on the flywheel so it's vertical, and given it a sharp blow.

Nicely done Hoxiii clean crisp explanation and how to... just what the thread was needing
Well Bobby, Dennis should have a hand held plug in Mag tester there..and the powder to use one isnt all that much..So he shouldnt have any problem magging it with you there? Of unless he gives you proof that its is indeed free of cracks on the reciept...
I still like Larry's idea of the 10lb sledge!!! And whack em like your gonna ring the bell at the carnival game!! Then you can tell him "yep" they are all cracked?
