Wow, what a day. My dad came into town and we tore into my 460. We removed the tranny, all the accessories, the exhuast manifolds, and the intake manifold. This took a few hours and a few more than a few beers. Anyways, when we tried to turn the engine through, with a wrench, we could only get it to turn about 1/4 of the way. We didn't have a pipe or anything for leverage. We were trying to do this with a 1/2 drive socket wrench. My concern is that one of the pistons is frozen up. Do you think this is the case or do you think we simply couldn't get enough leverage? If it is frozen, does this render the engine worthless or could a machine shop fix the problem?
I don't know of any other work that has been done to this engine. We did pull all the spark plugs and that didn't help. Our next move is to remove the heads and take a peek.

w/sparkplugs out you should be able to turn the engine over by hand with a standard 1/2" ratchet w/o additional leverage.
I had the same problem with a 460 I had just bought from an individual, supposedly just rebuilt and ready to go. By the time I got home and was able to start tinkering with it, I couldn't get mine to turn through either. After taking it to machine shop, come to find out one of the cylinders was caked up so bad with rust it was interfering w/piston. They were able to clean off rust, but they had to sleeve the one cylinder since it was pitted pretty bad. Just got motor all together again and finally dropped in my truck and it seems to be fine.

Thanks for all the ideas! On the tear down, we found that the problem was rust. The rust was in #7 & 8. After some deliberation, we decided that since I was going to take it to a shop anyway we would go ahead and drive those pistons out of the cylinders. To our suprise they came out pretty easy. None the less, it's all apart!
