hello. i bought a 98 expy 4wd and i have a problem. in Drive i can select awd and 4 hi and it seems to work. i can drop it in Neutral and try to select 4 low and it clicks in the dash and the awd lights up. it's not engaging in 4 low. has anyone had this problem. i've tried to back up a little and and pull forward, still no luck. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
Do you have your foot on the brake when it's in neutral when switching to 4 low ? If so and it's still not working then I'd say it's your electronic shift motor on the transfer case thats bad.

yea i had my foot on the brake. any idea on the price of the motor and how hard it is to replace myself. i hate paying someone to fix something i can do myself, this is just the first 4wd i have had that has a selection ****.
I believe they're around $150, I've never actually changed one myself so I can't truthfully answer your question on how hard it is to change. Here's a post I came across that might help you though.
The transfer case motor is underneath the vehicle...on the drivers side.... about under the rear (2nd) seat. There are three bolts that connect
it the case....and one more for support on the other end. I was able to unbolt the motor without raising the vehicle. What is tricky is that the wiring harness that is used for the motor is ALSO used for 2 speed sensors, and a brown wire that goes directly into the transfer case. So when you unbolt the transfer case motor....its NOT free...for its still attached to these other wires. I found it earsier to remove the speed senors and take everthing to the work bench to swap the pins. You need to use a very small screw driver to spread the plastic clip inside the connector which then enables you to pull the wire out from behind. To replace, the pins snap right very easily.
If you can change an alternator or starter....you can do this job.
