You can be stopped and it will go in. I just wish Ford would get rid of the the electric motor and go to a lever w/ the ESOF hubs. I think that would be the best setup a guy could have.
Never again will I get ESOF. It was a nightmare on my 04 350. Picking up a new 08 250 hopefully tomorrow and its manual. My new truck wish list was Captains chairs, manual 4WD, and towing mirrors... any other options were just gravy.
ok, should be an easy question. I have an '03 and the markers are worn off the hubs. Which way do I need to turn them to lock the hubs? Clock-wise or counter clock-wise.?
I have the switch on the dash, but don't see any vac. lines going to the hubs.

PO may have switched out the auto for manual. My guess, without vacuum lines going to the hubs.
Remember, the ESOF hubs also have the **** on the hub to turn them from AUTO to LOCK. Just because you can turn the hubs does not mean you have automatic hubs.
As for the auto hubs with a manual transfer case....my old 1995 F-150 had that. The automatic hubs were the kind that you had to back up to disengage....hated them, broke them, installed a set of Warn Premium hubs and never had another problem.
Thanks for the advise. I know a lot of you like to change the hubs or lock them in maually for the winter, but I would just like to have then working properly. I don't really want the hubs locked in all winter when I don't use the 4 wheel all the time. I have checked out several problems with out taking it in to the deal. I find most of the time they just fix things by trial and error the same as I would and charge a fortune for it. I changed the vaccuum selinoid and it didn't do anything. I noticed the hubs wher not locking in when I used the swith on the dash for esof. I pulled one of the vaccuum lines of and no suction. I changed the vaccuum pump because I noticed the defroster control was acting wierd and shutting on and off by itself. I heard this was one of the symptoms of the pump not working right. I bought a new pump and now it can hear the hubs locking in and out but still no 4 wheel on auto. The 4 wheel works fine if I leave the hubs turned to maual and I can shift in on and off from the dash. I noticed the new pump makes a sound the old one didn't. It also runs a long time before it shuts off, after I have made attempt to us the auto hubs. During the time this is running for the hubs the heat fan acts up again. It is my thoughts that the seals in the hubs are leaking although I don't hear any air leakage. I found on one of the forums the other day a fellow who had extensive reserch and illistrations on how to replace the seals in side the wheel. I have been trying to find it again to no avail. I am stuck now and looking for some adivce. Thanks.
Or you sure you don't have a vacuum hose leaking? Your ac will default to the defrost vents when you turn the switch to 4x4 if you have a vacuum leak. To check the hubs, plug the vacuum lines going to the hubs at the hubs. In other words pull the lines off the hubs and plug them. Turn your ac on to front vents, turn your switch to 4x4, if your ac does not go to defrost, you have leaks in your hubs.
Thanks so much. I will try it and keep you posted. Yes that is a good idea. Do you a source or know of one where I can get detailed instuctions on how to replace the seals if that is the problem? I need pictures hahah Thanks.
Here is something you can look at http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/allube.html This is to only keep the auto hubs working right. I will try to find something about the seals.
Wow that is awesome. I will read it carefully and try the vaccuum leak thing first. I bought the truck used and it is a 2003 that came from Vancouver. I don't imagine the four wheel drive was used much. I would think the hubs need servicing no matter what. Thanks again.
One big advantage to manual hubs is the ability to use low range on the t-case without actually being in 4wd...great for manuevering a large load into a tight spot!

Someone posted a mod to turn off the vacuum solenoid - oh, back in 2003 or so?
If you're going to be doing it long enough, you can always just disconnect the power connector for the vacuum solenoid.
