Leaking heater core, have a question.

Im smelling coolant in my vents so I am going to replace heater core for first time. I read that you must re-seal the core cover with silicone.
What kind of sealant sould I use?
I dont want to seal it forever, incase I need to get back in there 5 years from now.!

Also, I called napa $45. I called stealer $90. I'm thinking dealer on this one for quality. Any comments?

Thanks

Ryan

When i replaced my heater core i just used right stuff, it's made by permatex i think, but i think any silicone would work. I've never had any experiance with napa cores, i replaced mine with a motorcraft core and have been very happy with it.

I picked up a heater core and an oring/spacer/clip kit. Now I will put it on tomorrow after work. Winter is rough. I sure wish the garage was a few more inches taller. Maby I can drive it in on the brake rotors .....
Im still not sure about sealling the duct cover/core cover thing.

I wouldn't seal it up like that either.
Maybe a thin application of sticky-back foam or something like that. But not a bead of silicone, you'll never get it apart again without breaking the housing.

I'm glad you said that. Does it even need anything more than what it already has stock? I like the little thin foam idea.

I'm not sure what to expect when I pop the cover. I just want to get a plan before I get into it tomorrow. Anyone else do a heater core on these things.

If I were going to do the job on my truck, I would never bother with any sort of strip or sealer.
I would just put the panel back up and screw it down.
The man that works for me did the core on his '89 F250 and he told me that he spent more time going to the parts store to get a new heater hose than he did actually doing the job. VERY easy to do. Just remove the glovebox and there is the access panel
