Bad idle

1977 F-150,460,C-6,Motorcraft 5bbl carb,new wires,new plugs gapped at 55,new dist.cap and rotor,timing set from 14btdc to 6b,vacuum at intake is a very steady 20 lbs. The idle is extremly rough and when you raise rpm about 500 the engine levels off.From 20up to 75mph everything sounds and feels real good and smooth.What has me befuddled is the vacuum staying steady at idle. With a bad miss should'nt the gauge flutuate? The engine has about 85,000 on it. One other thing. This does not have an EGR plate, should it? Iwas told the truck was bone stock. Thanks for any help and opinions.

Bad idle

Try gapping your plugs at about 44 or 45, and you might take a little timing out of it, try about 10 to 12 btdc. Dont worry about the egr plate. Just make sure theres not a vacuum leak.

I'm with dvlinnell. It sounds like you could have a vacuum leak. You will still have good vacuum if the leak is minor, but it will cause performance problems.
