Hi. Just reading up on the transmission VB replacement. I have a bone stock 2000 7.3 with 103,000 miles and am looking to get Guages and DP tuner. I have a landscape maint. business and I tow a 4500 pound trailer constantly in stop and go traffic. I'm looking at towing in 80 tow and driving in 80 econo most of the time. I am gearing up to do my mods shortly but don't really want to spend money on the non essentials.. Should I put a high priority on the VB replacement before the tuner and steady towing? Will the stock trans hold up for a long time as is? What's your opinion.

Frankly, I think a supplemental tranny cooler (ex. TruCool) is the first thing you should do (if you haven't already) or maybe just get the 6.0 cooler. Towing without enough cooling will cook this tranny.
get the gauges before anything else. I tow and I have towed heavy with mine, stock trans cooler on a 2000 and towing 15,000lbs in 85degree day max I ever saw was 185 trans temp running a predator tuner (have since switched to the dp and never even gotten that high although haven't towed that heavy since either)
But if your remotely pushing 190 on any kind of regular bases then yes by all means upgrade the cooler on the trans first and formost if not then don't waste your money. This is one of those reasons why you want gauges. a trans is not best kept as cool as possible, there really is a optimal temp and it's not below 140 degrees constantly (actually an automatic is most effiicient and best working at around 150 degrees running coolers to keep it below that is not good)
So, if I run a tuner and watch the transmission temp and it stays where it should, I don't need to worry about the VB? It won't wear out any faster if temps are ok? Does the tightening up on the shifts save on wear that mutch? I know... too many questions. But I guess the only dumb questions are the ones you ask yourself on the ride home in the tow truck.

guess I should have added that a VB or do a transgo tugger shift kit (basically same thing as teh replacement VB, since that is what they trans guys are doing is installing the kits into the VB, just depends on your confidence to do it vs your pocket book) would be in order with the DPtuner. You could get by without it by watching your temps and be fine, but trust me a modified vb either bought as a drop in or install the shift kit yourself makes a difference on how they shift when chipped and for the better.
My first post was more just commenting on the additional coolers and when or if needed.
